For those of you who have not heard the sad news, it is with a very heavy heart that I write this journal today Please take a moment to read the sad announcement from a couple of weeks ago:
Damien Grimm was known to many of us as "GrimFace242", he then changed his username to inknalcohol and with it he gave his online image a revamping He was a very dear friend to many of us He was the kind of person that if you had the pleasure to get to know him a little better, you would understand why for many of us, there is very little difference between "online friends" and "real life" ones If you befriended Grimsey, you were going to embark in one of those beautiful friendships that would make you long to be able to travel where he lived and have a chat (and a drink, that's for sure) with him
I personally regret not having done so, and it's one of those regrets that right now is eating up my soul
Here's an interview of him:
He earned his Angel Wings on December 7th, 2014
His Award read the following message, it was written by the suggester, DMD-CT, and it's as follows:
"Grimsey is one of the sweetest, coolest deviants I've met so far! He is a big pillar in the Literature part of the community, but he's also a beloved friend to people from all corners of dA! He involves everybody in all sorts of sweet, fun ways, through features, challenges, recommendations, fun polls, and so much more! Anyone who has had the privilege to get to know him can attest to the fact that he's the friend we can go to, when we need ANYTHING! He will be there, with his honest opinion and a ton of ideas!!! But he doesn't stop there, he also does such a lot for his friends. He treats us all with the utmost kindness, to the point that he even sends paper notes via regular mail to those who are in need of more of his sweet contact! I love you dear Grimsey!!! So much!!!"
This was the original journal where he was included:
He was an amazing writer, he wrote with LOVE and PASSION, and you could feel that in every single one of his creations; here are a few pieces from his gallery:
Best Damn WomanWhen I was younger, my home life wasn't really conducive to having friends. My only friend for most of my life was my cousin. We were only a few months apart in age, but we felt like twins. Finished each others' sentences, would text the same things to each other at the same time, could sense when the other was in pain or just needed a pick me up. We invaded each others' lives and were the last person we each said "I love you" to at the end of the day.
A little over a year ago, she was killed in a car wreck along with her husband. But there are times I still get those feelings. Still want to grab my phone and send a text. Sometimes, I've actually sent the text and then I wonder who the person is on the receiving end. They've never responded. Not sure what I'd do if I did get a response.
I miss her more than I've ever missed anything. Even her faults. Like when she'd take over my house and force me to do something I didn't want to do. Joining dA was one of those take overs.&
Breakup SpeechIt's not you, it's me. I know it's the oldest excuse in the book, but hey, when it works, it works. Did you really see this lasting longer than a couple months? When does anything last longer than a couple months with me? I hope we can still be friends.
Yeah, 'cause everyone wants to be friends with the ex-lover. Like it ever works.
You know me. You know the type of person that I am. I've never been able to settle down. My heart wanders like a nomad. It seeks shelter where it's offered but only stays long enough to get warm. Attachment isn't an option for me. My mind is too warped. It's too dark to ever let someone in. Truly let someone in.
No, fuck! That's all wrong. It's too personal. Too emotional. Let me try again.
I don't want to do this, but I'm only going to hurt you if I don't. And that's the last thing I want to do. So I'm ending this before it goes too far. I completely understand if you never want to talk to me again.
The Dream of Returning Home
Clay carefully tucked the silver necklace and St Jude medal under his shirt. It'd fallen out when Luke landed a nice right cross and nearly put Clay on the ground. But he'd recovered quicker than Luke ever thought he would and capitalized on the surprise with an upper cut that left Luke laid out. It took three of their crew to carry him to the medical bay. Clay had walked and patiently waited to be attended to for his injuries.
He'd only had a moment to glance out the window and see the small dot of light that was his home before Crash was sitting down in front of him and asking why he'd picked another fight. “I was bored.”
“Most people have hobbies for when they're bored.” Crash pulled a fresh kit out and opened the package so he could clean the open wounds on Clay's face.
“Fighting is my hobby.” Clay smirked at the look Crash gave him. “What?”
“Sometimes, I don't think you'll ever learn.
He also was passionate about helping out the community, he served deviantart as one of the Community Volunteers for the Lit Category, and he did an amazing job, because he was not only doing that, but also running groups pretty successfully at the same time!!!
Here are a few guides and resources he left in his gallery for us:
5 Steps to Organize Your NovelWhat You'll Need:
A basic story idea
Printer (preferably laser) with plenty of paper
Three Ring Binders (2) with separating tabs
Build Your World and Characters
For most writers, this comes naturally. If you're having some issues, there are plenty of tutorials, guides, aids and groups available for assistance. For the purpose of this guide, you should have your world built and at the very least your main characters devised. Having secondary characters planned will get you bonus points!
Print Character and Plot Sheets
Each character should have their own sheet (keep the backs blank, they're a grand place to keep extra notes and page references). It's not necessary that you fill out every single line of the character sheet. Fill out only what is necessary for the character/plot. Feel free to add to the sheet as your write, too. The
A Guide to Character SheetsAlmost as soon as they were invented, people have been feuding over the effectiveness of character sheets. Some say they are godsends and they couldn't possibly create characters without them. Others say they only create flat characters and there's absolutely no reason why any writer should need to know the smallest and most minute details that character sheets call for. And then there are the writers that don't know which side of the debate they should listen to.
The easiest answer to that question is it's a personal decision that every writer needs to make for themselves. But before you make that decision, maybe you should know how they work and the benefits you can gain from them.
You see, when used correctly, sheets can really assist an author in keeping the facts about their world and characters straight. Otherwise, on page ten little Anne has green eyes, but on page thirty-two they change to blue, and miraculously enough on page fifty-five they're brown or back to green.
These are tributes and quoted excerpts from the messages that were left on his page, written by some of the people who knew him and loved him:
This earth has lost a great shimmering light. Rest in Peace, Damien. We will always love you. " -- LindArtz
"He definitely made me feel welcome here on this site. Funny, I never truly met him but I knew him, his writings defined him ..." --- Amarantheans
"... Rest in Peace Damien, you will be missed for sure
Wherever you are now, make sure there is enough Whiskey & pie." -- ginkgografix
I can't quite wrap my head around this. I thoroughly enjoyed Damien's comments and involvement in the community, and was surprised and a little saddened when he decided to back away from dA earlier in the year. Maybe that was in anticipation of this? It speaks to his commitment to people around him to leave instructions to let us know that he's gone. Gone but not forgotten. Godspeed Damien." -- SRSmith
"I'm so saddened to hear about this. Damn, did I love Grimmsy. He knew how to cultivate fun while encouraging us all to improve our skills as writers and artists. Grimmsy, I hope wherever you are now, you're surrounded by an endless supply of dogs and Jameson. I will so, so miss you." -- MeganLawler94
